Yes! Attending Reunion
Were your parents living in Downers Grove when you were born?

No

From what high school did you Graduate?

Nazareth Academy

What is your favorite memory of attending St. Joseph School?

My first day and its little miracle.

Up until then I had been a worrier and was very worried about going to this new school where I knew no one and had little experience of going to mass--what one was supposed to do? I could not sleep that night. Sensing this, my mother told me my patron saint was St Jude. She said I should pray to him and he would help me. So I prayed for the first time. That morning my mother dropped me off at the Curtis St corner and I was on my own. There were "thousands" of boys running madly around and somehow I had to walk the gauntlet to a church that was somewhere. Right then a crossing guard--probably an 8th grader--came up to me and said, "You're the new girl. Walk over there." And he pointed to the sidewalk in front of the school. Next, another boy told me to keep going and I found myself in front of the church. Told to go up the stairs, a nun came to me and placed me in a pew. And that was how I fell in love with St Jude. He'd made sure I got to where I was supposed to be AND I never had to even open my mouth!

In what grade did you start attending St. Joe's?

Second

What is your least favorite memory of attending St. Joseph School?

The worst was in 8th grade.

We now all know that in 8th grade Sr Adrian Marie suffered from migraines. It seemed then that she would leave the class for hours. When she first left, she put Phil in charge of the class with orders to write the names of the "talkers" on the board. Well, Mr Verveer figured that one out! He wrote no names on the board. The place went up for grabs. So next she pulled me up in front, and, stupid me obeyed. One morning, all dressed, breakfast done I sat on the dining room chair unable to stand. My mother realized I was so tortured by fingering my classmates that she let me stay home.

Sr Adrian Marie may have had migraines but I'd had my own trauma.

Was it your usual routine to go home for lunch?

No

What was your usual, most common, way of getting to school?

Parent or Sibling Drove Me

Did you have any siblings?

Yes

At peak, what was the highest number of siblings attending St. Joe's while you, too, were a student?

Two (Including Me)

During the entire time of your attendance at St. Joe's, in which of these activities and events were you a participant?

Scouting

Can you remember the names of any of the movies we saw in the 2nd floor, beamed-ceiling, great room (before it was converted into two classrooms)?

Absolutely not

Did you have a before or after school job while you were a student at St. Joe's?

No

Autobiography/Abbreviated Life Story Provided in 2008 for 50th Reunion

Graduated from Nazareth and on to U of Dayton for 2 years. Transferred to and graduated from Marquette. By that July I'd started working at the Chgo Police Dept as a system analyst and moved to Chicago, so happy to leave DG, Went to work for Columbus Hospital as assistant Personnel Dir, made Personnel Dir then off to the AMA as their Compensation and Benefits Mgr. Married Bill in 1968 at 25. Moved to Elmhurst 3 yrs later and then at 30 became a stay-at-home mom to Michael and then Beth. Did all the mom things. Bill believed in big vacations and so have traveled a great deal.

Bill retired at 52 and so did I. We'd had some real estate holdings which we happily sold. I'd had my interior design business which I closed down. We both volunteered for many organizations and decided to sleep past 7:00am.

School Story or Update Life Story: What's happened since 2008 that you'd like to share.

Our daughter, Beth, married in 2012. With no baby on the way, Bill and I decided to buy in Siesta Key, off Sarasota. We remodeled it and enjoyed our winters there. But in Feb 2015, Bill died from a brain bleed in less than 24 hrs. We were married for 46 yrs. Our lst grandson was born that Sept. The following year our son married and now has a 1 1/2 yr son named after Bill. I babysit weekdays for my grandsons who live close by and give me a purpose. Oh, yeah, and a 7:00 am alarm! And I will gladly show you pictures of these boys without request.

Tom--I count 50 kids in that first grade. Can you imagine any teacher trying to teach that number of kids today? Even if the 50 knew their ABC's and could count to 25, that would be quite impossible. I think these numbers could only be considered in 3rd world countries where teachers are deeply respected and few are schooled. Fortunately I came in 2nd grade and you kids were all caught up! Har, har. Judy

I had the opportunity right before the reunion to look through the DG Yearbook (everyone looked sooooo good) and saw that who I had looked for as Tim Schlissler was really Tom. Tom Walker and I had tried to locate him but of course we were looking under the wrong name. Do any of you remember him? I think he was in our 5th grade class for one year and was very well liked. Then there's also Nancy Metz . . . . and the list goes on. Judy

Mary Ellen--Perhaps some told you, but let me say again that all the "kids" loved your mother. She was such a great and kind teacher. I remember standing having been called upon to answer a "thought" problem and just unable to do so. Your Mom understood I was incapable and kindly had me sit down. She didn't embarrass me more than I'd embarrassed myself.. And who was that other 7th grade teacher? She was a meany. Judy B

Karen--I remember one of the nuns--can't remember who--very pointedly talking about working on the Sabbath. Obviously everyone thought of Fritz Foods. At the time I thought that was uncalled for. I remember getting an ice cream cake roll at your parent's store for Christmas. Every Christmas I hope to make one and never have. Then I remember seeing you on the Burlington after college. We were both going into Chicago for work. You were married at that time I think. Do you remember? Judy B

Marsha--Thought you had some harsh memories of SJS but those aren't memories that I or others have of you. Consider coming to the reunion. You will be very welcomed. Judy B

Bryant--You didn't remember when we talked at our 50th that your Mom and mine were friends. I remember your older sister and having rabbit in your kitchen (tastes like chicken!). You lived in this big white(?) house with (to me) enormously high ceilings. I think I even had a sleep over in your house. I still like rabbit! Judy B

David--Wasn't your Dad a pharmacist on Main Street? I remember walking home past your tree covered house and now know you were biking home ahead of me because I never saw you or Jim
David--Wasn't your Dad a pharmacist on Main St? I remember walking home from school and never seeing you or Jim Ferguson going home. Guess you boys were biking and I was hoofing it. I remember your house having bushes/trees all around it. Funny what we remember. Judy B

Pat--Didn't realize you did not graduate from Nazareth. Where was my head in those days? If you remember . . . I'm having Julie Morgan visit me this coming week and I'm still good friends with Marge Cooney and see her when I'm at my place in Florida. Eleven grandchildren! Well done. Judy B

Christine--Good to hear from you. We lost touch after I moved into Chicago and I always wondered what happened to you. Meant to talk with you at the last reunion but just didn't have enough time. Let's catch up this time. Judy
